A short report from the 2013 MWP Event – A Young Researcher’s Perspective

The 2013 Marcus Wallenberg Prize Event

The two-day event in connection to the Marcus Wallenberg Prize Ceremony begins with the young researchers, a talented group who has gathered in the room New York at Grand Hotel to discuss the future of the forest industry. Mr Marcus Wallenberg enters the room and greets everyone. He explains why he sees continued interest in the forest-based sector, despite its challenges.

We are all convinced that paper and board will make a comeback. But research on new and improved techniques and products is immensely important and that is why you all are here today.

Gunilla Jönson, the MWP Selection Committee chairman, urges the young researchers to network, mingle and talk to each other. She adds:
“You are some of the most important people at this event and for the future.”

During the session, young researchers discussed in groups what the future techniques or products they see coming from the forest industry. Ideas such as 3D printed paper products were brought up but also printed electronics and textile. Some discussed the need of a new mindset in large corporations and the potential in cross-disciplinary research groups.

Super capacitors made of paper? It is possible according to Britta Andres, a PhD candidate from the Mid Sweden University and one of three women who presented their research. Britta explained how paper could be functionalized (either coated or filled) in order to make the capacitor work and that this technology works well with conventional papermaking.

The first day ended perfectly in the hall Vinterträdgården where guests enjoyed good food, good tunes and a touching speech by the award winner Derek Gray, after he received the Prize from His Majesty the King of Sweden.

In conjunction with the symposium on the second day, the prize winner family members and special guests spent time at the newly opened art museum Artipelagen, an architectural masterpiece where the nature of the Stockholm archipelago and temporary art exhibitions can be enjoyed simultaneously.

After the excursion, the guests headed to Täcka Udden at Djurgården for lunch hosted by Mrs. Fanny Sachs.
