Canada sends young researchers to MWP

Canadian FIBRE Network is strongly supporting the participation of young Canadian researchers to the Marcus Wallenberg prize ceremony and symposium. During the recent 2nd FIBRE Network conference in Vancouver, five young researchers were selected by the jury to represent FIBRE and Canada in Sweden at the ceremonies and symposium in 2014.

The 5 following researchers will be heading towards Stockholm in September:

• Claudia Cambero, University of British Columbia: Strategic Optimization of Forest Biomass Value Chains with Economic, Environmental and Social Considerations.

• Richard Chandra, University of British Columbia: Enzymatic Modification of Conventional Kraft Pulps for Conversion to Specialty Grade Cellulose.

• Kevin Conley, McGill University: The Crystalloid Twist Structure of Cellulose and its Implications.

• Keith Gourlay, University of British Columbia:  CBM Adsorption as a Tool for Quantifying the Surface Morphology of Cellulosic Fibers.

• Laure Kayser, McGill University: Metal-Free Synthesis of Conjugated Polymers from Lignin-Based Vanillin.

Fibre-network had pre-elected 11 potential young scientists to present their work in a specific Marcus Wallenberg competition. All competitors did an outstanding job in pitching the content and future potential of their research.

Last year was the first time Canadian students participated in the Wallenberg celebrations and symposium. These 2013 Marcus Wallenberg Student Winners presented their exciting and stimulating experiences in Sweden to the FIBRE Network conference audience. Students appreciated the overall programme and networking possibilities with key persons in the forest sector during their visit, not to forget the reception with the King and Queen of Sweden.
